About the association

The Pineapple is a publication of The Pineapple Association Incorporated.  The Association is incorporated in Queensland under the authority of the Office of Fair Trading.

The Association is a not-for-profit organisation, which means that its governing document requires it to use all of its income and assets to advance its charitable objects.

Charitable objects

The Association’s charitable objects are to advance culture by publishing and promotion of literature and visual art, specifically journalism, creative writing, photography and art by authors who were born in Queensland or spent a significant portion of their writing or creative career in Queensland.

The publishing and promotion of such literature and visual art are for the cultural benefit of Queensland and the Australian public and these benefits include:

  1. Enhancing Queensland’s reputation as a state producing high quality journalism, creative writing, photography and art
  2. Fostering a new network of journalists, creative writers, photographers and artists from Queensland
  3. Developing and promoting emerging journalists, creative writers, photographers and artists.

Meaningful restrictions

The Association may not distribute any portion of its income and assets to the members of the Association unless it is genuine compensation for services rendered or expenses incurred on behalf of the Association.  No excessive compensation is allowed.

In addition, the members of the Management Committee of the Association are required by law and by their self-adopted Governance Charter to disclose material personal interests in decisions taken by the Management Committee.  They must also refrain from voting on decisions where they are materially conflicted.

A copy of the Management Committee’s Governance Charter is available here.

The Charter combines the Management Committee’s duties under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 with the Governance Standards upheld by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
