Live or work in a flood-prone region of Gympie? Come to a conversation with council in Jul, Aug

Vivienne Wynter

Following the record 2022 floods in Gympie, where several people died and many were rescued after harrowing hours in the water, Gympie Regional Council is running a Community Flood Awareness & Education Project.

Joining forces with floodplain specialists, Synergy Solutions, the project aims to help flood-impacted communities strengthen their flood resilience.

Project officers will visit Gympie, Imbil, Jones Hill, Kilkivan, Monkland, Southside and Widgee in late July/early August to chat with residents, businesses and community groups about what flooding looks like in these areas and the triggers signalling when to take action.

Sharing practical info

These sessions in Gympie’s high risk flood areas will share practical information on how local catchments behave during flood events, which flood gauges, cameras and info sources to monitor and how to identify key decision points as conditions change.

They are also a chance for community members to share local knowledge to help Gympie Council shape new, simple, practical flood awareness plans, including flood maps.

Sessions can be one‑on‑one or with small groups such as neighbours or local community members who share the same flood behaviour.

Project officers can meet where it suits locals.

Gympie Mayor says council wants to share local knowledge

Gympie Regional Council Mayor, Glen Hartwig, said the Community Flood Awareness and Education Program was an important chance to build knowledge and confidence across the region.

‘Our region is no stranger to flooding, but every flood event is experienced differently by each household, business and community,’ Cr Hartwig said.

‘Understanding what flooding looks like in your local area helps you make informed decisions earlier and act with greater confidence.’

‘This program is not only about learning but also about sharing local knowledge and experiences to strengthen community preparedness.

‘By sharing your experiences, you are assisting council in developing outcomes to suit your local area and needs during a flood event.’
