THEATRE PREVIEW: Sisters: a dark, feminist fantasy

Vivienne Wynter

Perseverance Street Theatre Company have announced their third professional production: Sisters: a dark, feminist fantasy exploring the volatile bond between two women in their middle years who are bound by blood, history and buried rage.

Written by Sofia Abbey and Sharon Hogan and starring Kerith Atkinson and Jo Loth, Sisters is set in an isolated beach house. The story unfolds over one highly charged night. As a husband lies possibly dying in the next room, the sisters are forced into an impossible moral crossroads: intervene, ignore, or unleash the truths they’ve spent a lifetime suppressing.

Savage and tender

What emerges is both savage and tender: a reckoning with responsibility, identity and the fragile architecture of sisterhood.

Atmospheric, provocative and darkly funny, Sisters asks: when everything falls apart, what remains between us?

Perseverance Street Theatre CEO, Sharon Hogan, says the play is fiction based on real events.

The genesis of Sisters was a moment in 2009.

Darkly comic

‘It was frightening, darkly comic and surreal: the kind of memory that never quite leaves you,’ said Hogan. ‘Over the years, it resurfaced again and again, replaying in my mind and refusing to be forgotten.

‘Collaborating with Sofia Abbey was instrumental in shaping the play. Together, we chose to create a fictional story inspired by one challenging evening shared by two sisters.

‘That balance: between truth and imagination, allowed us to remain emotionally honest while exploring beyond the original experience.’

Sisters plays at Perseverance Street Theatre Company in Gympie every night from Monday 15 June to Saturday 20 June. Tickets for the Gympie shows available here

A Brisbane season runs at the Queensland Multicultural Centre from 3 to 7 July. Tickets to the Brisbane shows available here
