One of Queensland’s youngest local government councillors, Sara Diana Faraj, is talking politics at a Politics and Prosecco event in Gympie this month.
Elected to Fraser Coast Council last year at the age of 22 (now 23), Ms Faraj is a former Building Hardware team member at Bunnings Warehouse. As well as being a councillor, she now studies at Griffith University.
Amy Roberts, of Pearl Class Communications, organised the event which aims to ‘talk about politics in a fun way’.

‘I know people’s eyes glaze over when politics comes up. Politics and Prosecco is different,’ Ms Roberts said.
‘Sara Faraj is representing a fresh, genuine and dynamic voice for young women in leadership. This intimate event will explore her journey into politics, her advocacy and her inspiring work in public service,’ Ms Roberts said.
‘Politics affects every facet of your life, including the air you breathe.
‘It’s not enough to say “I don’t do politics” anymore. Understanding how politics works is a really important personal responsibility.’
Ms Faraj is one of a rising number of young people to stand for local government and political office generally in Queensland.

To qualify, candidates must:
- be over 18 years old;

- be nominated by six electors who are currently enrolled in the local government area the person is contesting, or be endorsed by a registered political party;
- not be disqualified from nominating under Local Government Act 2009 (Qld); and

Politics & Prosecco is the first of a new series of events in Gympie designed for locals to connect, gain insight and be empowered by stories of leadership and public service.
